New Boro Commerce Committee

By Councilman Christopher Goss

The Administration Committee would like to announce the formation of a new Commerce sub-committee. This committee will be comprised of members of council and volunteers from the local business community who will work as a direct line of communication between the governing body and our local merchants and business owners. Commercial vitality is the bedrock of a prosperous community, and Point Pleasant finds itself in a period of transition that offers a unique opportunity to self examine, take stock, and decide what lessons of the past will propel us into the future.

The first task of this committee will be to survey our local businesses; retail, office or home based, to get an understanding of conditions that have been helpful and conditions that have been prohibitive to new and established businesses alike. Whether it’s a need that isn’t being met or a fresh idea for attracting business, if there is action that can be taken we must be open to it. If it’s an outdated zoning restriction or vague ordinance, we need the experience of those most directly affected to help us identify and eliminate the obstacles to our Boro’s businesses.

The second task of this new committee and it’s designees will be to act as agents of the Boro in actively courting and soliciting new business to our town. This Committee’s purpose and sole concern is to support existing commerce and help Point Pleasant be welcoming and attractive to new ventures and new ideas. To achieve this we need the help of our business community. I would ask anyone interested in sharing their time and expertise to please contact me with a little information about yourself, your business, and your outlook past, present, and future.

I encourage the Commerce Committee to work closely with the Chamber of Commerce to avoid duplication and streamline results. These are great ideas, but they should involved the Chamber of Commerce, which already has outstanding leaders from the business community and an active Council Liaison in Jack McHugh.

I wouldn’t want it any other way. I see this as another way to bring the conversations typically had at watercoolers, over a cup of coffee, or in casual passing directly to the ears of council so that we may take more direct and expedient action on behalf of the business community.
